Coral fossils, A bison herd, and a long dirt road —Sambaa Deh Falls & Fort Liard

After a week in the Yellowknife area, we knew we needed to head onward or we were going to loose steam and grow roots in this amazingly friendly community. So we retraced our tracks back down highway 3 through the bison corridor and back over the Mackenzie River – without seeing any wildlife. Our turn onto Highway 1 put us back on the water fall route (Deh Cho Trail) and we were delighted with our overnight at Sambaa Deh Terratorial Park where we followed Maddie on a short hike to Coral Falls. Here the fossils of coral in the rocks of the river bed lend a very apt name to these short falls.

The next morning we hiked in to Sambaa Deh Falls along a great trail that was strangely high above the river & falls. This was unlike Coral Falls where the falls and river bed were rather “shallow” and this area is less than 1/2 a mile below the Coral Falls. The boreal forest continues to delight and amaze us.

We then plunged onward, about 400 KM of dirt road that we would come to cherish (see approach to Dawson City on the Alaskan Highway) arriving at Fort Liard Municipal Campground just as we ran out of go power. We saw one bison as we found our campsite. Ravens heralded our day.

This all changed in the middle of the night (twilight prevails) when a bison stumbled into our campsite wondering why a camper was blocking his access to his watering hole. Maddie was very disturbed.

And then, just as we were finishing breakfast the next morning, we realized that our solitary bison wasn’t so lonely afer all. And, we got to witness the amazing migration of a bison herd. So much fun.
