Additional Photos from our stay on the south side of Great Slave Lake

Camping on the Great Slave Lake Beach

Here are some additional photos from our stay on the south side of Great Slave Lake. When the winds were calm we noticed that mirages would form at the horizon. They happened “out at sea” where there was no land, which was interesting – basically, alternating dark/light lines. But even more interesting was when they were along the distant coast. The coastal image magnified and split into multiple images. The “normal” view of the coast was a small, irregular line that any of us would associate with a distant land mass. The distorted view was much more interesting.

Lori saw the phenomenon first. She said she had been watching it for almost an hour. We finally pulled out the binoculars and looked closer at it to figure out what was going on. It was quite amazing and large. Basically, a magnified coastline with an inverted mirror image above it. When we went for the camera and the right “longer” lens, the mirage disappeared… of course it did. It was a mirage. Anyway, it happened again the next afternoon, though not as dramatic. Here’s a pic I took of it, and then a zoom-in on part of the mirage that shows the effect we saw the day before — just not as dramatic. Still, very interesting!

And one more picture of each of the amazing sunsets we watched when we were camped by the lake. These pictures were taken at around 11:30 p.m. on each of those evenings. Fortunately, the sun doesn’t rise until about 4am, so plenty of time for sleep. Of course, it never actually gets dark even when the sun is down. Fun.
