Denali Highway (aka Maddie’s Happy Place)

The Denali Highway is a real gem. About 130 miles that we traversed from west to east. We had heard great things about the Denali Highway and this mostly dirt back road did not disappoint. Numerous pull-outs provided for such great camping opportunities depending on your priorities. Maddie was pretty specific: far enough off the road that she could get safely in and out of the camper off leash and run a little bit, flat enough for us to level, a view (Lori piped up hopefully), etc. And, wow— we lucked out! Our first night on it we camped at mile 94.5, with a spectacular 180 degree+ view. One of the mountains in the distance is Mt. Deborah. She spends a lot of time in the clouds, but came out for a little while on the night we arrived.

We managed to get out for a hike in the tundra below our campsite. We squished and squashed our way through blueberries, picking some for energy, until we reached a bit of the local boreal forest. The mosquitoes in the forest were ready to receive us, even with deet! So, we braved them for 30 minutes or so and turned back to the tundra. Along the way, we saw caribou sign, but not actual boos!
